Travelers on a budget should check out the rustic Hope Retreat Center (907/333-5050, www.alaskaumc.org , $75 for up to five people), a former church owned by the United Methodist Conference. This pretty log building has a big upstairs sleeping area and a large room (the old sanctuary), kitchen, and bath below. It’s comfortable, but not at all fancy. Bring sleeping bags for the cots and bunks, and towels for the bathroom. You’ll need to clean up before leaving.
Camping
At the end of Hope Highway is the Forest Service’s delightful Porcupine Campground (Mile 17.8 Hope Hwy., www.fs.usda.gov/chugach , $18), featuring fine views across Turnagain Arm, plenty of shade, and red raspberries as hors d’oeuvres in late summer. The 34-site campground makes an excellent base to explore the area, just a short distance from town and with tall trees and fine hiking opportunities.
Park RVs or pitch a tent in town at Seaview RV Park (end of Main St., 907/782-3300, www.seaviewcafealaska.com , tents $10, RVs $25 with electricity, cabins $60 d). Sites are along the creek, which is a popular spot to catch pink salmon (humpies) or to pan for gold. There are also several rustic cabins with outhouses available. Get water from adjacent Seaview Café. Alaska Dacha (19842 Hope Hwy., 907/782-3223, www.alaskadacha.com , tents $20, RVs $35) has full RV hookups at their location along the highway before you get to town.
